While working across borders does present some challenges, establishing a close collaboration and communication between teams was essential to the project’s successful completion. The Revalie is a contemporary student living development situated just across the Rideau River from Carleton campus in Ottawa, Canada. With over 60,000 sq. ft. of retail space and premier amenities, including a fitness center, social lounges, study rooms, and outdoor gathering areas.

Due to the pandemic, we were unable to make the trip out to conduct a physical survey of the site. This required coordination with our Partner and their general contractor team to ensure that our design solutions were accounted for during the construction process. Our next challenge was fully understanding the Accessible Canada Act (ACA) which is slightly different from American ADA requirements to ensure that the 600+ signs were in compliance.
Recognizing that The Revalie was more than just a large-scale interior and exterior signage project, we approached it as an opportunity to contribute to a high-end alternative in student living. Understanding the dynamic and youthful lifestyle of college students, our design and material selections prioritized functionality alongside a modern, stylish, and resilient aesthetic.
Our signage solutions extended beyond essential interior room identifiers and safety regulations. We designed prominent exterior main identity signage with brushed gold and warm indirect edge lighting for a sophisticated exterior finish. Illuminated wayfinding fabricated with the same cladding found on the building enhances the outdoor experience while providing needed directions visible day or night.
To further elevate the resident experience, we developed upgraded illuminated signage and architectural graphics for key amenity spaces such as the lobby, gaming room, and gym. A particularly noteworthy element is the “Hello Ottawa” mural. This art installation features carefully selected portions of popular street art from across the city, creatively incorporated into individual letters. By providing subtle clues to the original locations, the mural encourages residents to explore Ottawa and engage with the local community.
The success of The Revalie project is a testament to the power of collaboration, adaptability, and meticulous attention to detail. Despite the challenges posed by working across borders and the constraints of the pandemic, our team was able to deliver a contemporary student living space that seamlessly integrates function, style, and community engagement. From navigating accessibility regulations to designing full interior and exterior sign packages that elevates the entire space, every aspect was thoughtfully executed with resident and guest in mind.
