Austin symphony orchestra

Austin, TX

After more than fifty years in the historic Hamilton building, the Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is excited to welcome guests and staff to their vibrant new headquarters—marking a bold new chapter in its storied legacy. To commemorate this momentous move and create a meaningful first impression in their new space, ASO partnered with Studio Dzo to design and develop a unified interior and exterior signage and donor recognition experience.

  • Located on Austin’s historic Red River Street in the heart of the cultural district, the exterior sign for the Austin Symphony Orchestra was designed to be both timeless and highly visible. Its warm dark gray retainerless channel letters are faced with warm white translucent acrylic, providing exceptional contrast and legibility. These letters beautifully complement the color of the building’s exterior and the temperature of the ambient lighting, and are mounted on a custom-designed wireway inspired by staffs found in sheet music. This illuminated primary sign serves as a clear and elegant landmark, noticeable to both pedestrian and vehicular traffic.

Inspired by musical instruments—specifically the glockenspiel—we designed a complete ADA sign system that is elegant, functional, and compliant. Thoughtful donor recognition adorns each office; plotted vinyl and custom-cut blackened steel tactile text subtly echo the design details throughout the space.

Immediately greeting guests when they walk in is a breathtaking donor recognition wall in front of the newly realized box office. Taking inspiration from orchestra bells, the donor wall features laser-engraved names on custom-cut anodized aluminum in gold, silver, and black brushed finishes flanked by “Austin Symphony Orchestra” flush-mounted dimensional letters. This modular and scalable design system not only honors ASO’s generous supporters but also evokes the beauty and movement of sound.

Through thoughtful design, expert craftsmanship, and a profound respect for the language of music, we helped create an environment that doesn’t just support Austin Symphony Orchestra’s day-to-day operations—it sings with purpose. The result is a space where form follows feeling, and every element reminds us that music has the power to move, unite, and inspire.
